  1. Ansel Adams, Edward Weston and Eliot Porter were among the greatest landscape photographers of the twentieth century. Unlike many of today’s photographers have used film. The book “In the footsteps of Ansel Adams and the great masters: Digital Landscape Photography” is trying to translate their skills in the language of modern digital photography. />
The first part of the book, called “basic techniques” deals with the basic techniques of digital photography with a focus on how these techniques could be used for landscape photography. Experienced users may find little new, even if the declaration of the zone who have mastered the histogram, another method of calculation can lead to exposure. At the same time, the statements of the foundations to try very, concise to beginners. Perhaps the most help to understand the already familiar with the basics, how to apply these techniques, like the master. />
The second part of the book, entitled “Light, Composition and the art of seeing,” recalls the masters, in particular citing their words. The images are mainly of Frye, who are the masters is that his work can be seen clearly derived much of their style, and digitally recorded with the exception to the rule and color. Although this aspect of photography is the amorphous to describe in writing, not Frye a good job, and her beautiful pictures, mostly taken in Yosemite and other favorite places in Adams’s worth studying.

the last part deals with “The Digital Darkroom: handling, processing and printing” and that is where Frye shows how men would modern image processing software and ‘hardware, rather than introducing the use of chemical darkroom. Although quite extensive, is certainly not a primer Photoshop. Instead those who already know how to use the examples of such software, as Frye uses, see emulate the style of great masters. Since most of the manuals of Photoshop does not show many examples of practical applications, this can be very useful. />
My only complaint with the book is that I added some photos from the masters would have wanted, with further analysis of the images to reveal the techniques they used to meet his vision. There are still plenty of room for the photographer to view and analyze their works in other books. />
    N. photographer should expect (or fear) that, after reading this book are the images of how the Lords will take place. Rather, they should expect that some of the techniques, if adopted, will be incorporated into a personal style and complement the quality of their images.

  2. Grits says:

From the description of the book online, I expected something different. But I am not disappointed. The book description states that “[c] ontaine a number of wonderful works of Ansel Adams and other landscape masters like Edward Weston and Elliott Porter. In 160 pages, there are only three photos of Adams, and one each from Weston and Porter. With my personal feelings at work by Ansel Adams’, I could not wait to see more. But when I went through the book and yet, I realized that the true value of the book was to appreciate not only the finished works of Adams, but Frye’s own work and how he uses it to show how Adams has done what systematically. Adams’ manual filtering, dodging, burning, etc., are all carried out in the era of digital photography and digital manipulation of photographs. All eyes, at least some familiarity with the ability Adams’ “a picture before he took as his black magic to see the details in both bright highlights and deep shadows, Frye walkthrough really helped are able to appreciate the work Adams’ even more.

Someone has just started photography, who does not know what was beyond Ansel Adams images look good black and white, most likely lost quickly in this book. Someone who has never gone on a camera’s automatic settings are a very difficult period for the book. It is not just for beginners. But an amateur photographer to get at least enough experience with manual settings for the effects of light or depth required, will be able to appreciate this book and learn from them. amateur experts, and I suspect that many professionals, this book is very useful, both with improvements in technology and a greater appreciation for the work of the last films of masters like Adams, especially to find.
< , br /> While the author has at least some familiarity with software such as Photoshop, even a certain level of experience will enable the reader to improve his results. This is not a tutorial on the system area, or use software, but overall a good demonstration of how each is used to create a finished product in the digital age . Along the way there are a lot of detailed instructions, however, make it practical and useful. />
Probably the only reason I do not care, is a 5 star rating because I would like wait a while ‘for more on the steps rather than a quick overview of the various images and their changes with two or three versions of a photo to finished product. This is not to say that is not to make substantial written statement with images, but there is only so much you can put in a book of 160 pages are designed with themes for teaching entire courses. Size double with proportionally greater length in the instructions would have been nice. And perhaps this is a very positive confirmation of what is worthy of the book – not enough to be useful, but with the quality that the application requires even more.

Once again, although I do not understand exactly what I expected and I just wanted most was what I received I want to reiterate what I said earlier: they are not at all disappointed with my selection. When I met was in a library and spent some ‘time looking through them are quite confident that I bought. Actually, I had 4 ½ stars (I reserve 5 stars for the best products ever – and this certainly came close to putting). I give it a strong recommendation for all those who go on “” a good picture and is willing to want to put in the effort. This is not a “read once and understand you” book. very nice job, Mr. Frye.

  3. Digital Photography Landscape
excellent adaptation of master of light minimum for digital media advertising itself.

Truly a fun and useful book, style Ansel Adams et al dissected and then explains how to achieve a similar vision in digital media today. I was immediately taken by a discussion of a classic Adam’s “Moonrise, Hernandez, New Mexico, 1941″. There are short, his vision is subjected, and learn to see beyond the obvious. Technology for a lasting masterpiece – compose in his mind then take emotions to be moved in his heart. Difficult to express in words, but Michael Frye succeeds quite well.

Surprisingly, the idea of a pure image is removed. In other words, what you tried to do in Photoshop, and has Ansel’s darkroom. These two functions are in the manipulation of curves, levels, saturation and other parameters at our disposal are now translated. He assured, calm and feel free to develop your image, Ansel would have done the same. />
Much of the book is spent discussing the system area. In short, the light soaking in the scene in up to 10 zones from the darkest to the lightest. This is equivalent to evaluating histograms of digital images. ‘, Are, in relation to images, if the loud sound (usually bright) or low tone (mostly dark) and are only good to get a gray data. We are also on multiple images and HDR-mediated. Combining multiple and underexposed images in order to improve the image detail that would otherwise be hidden in the shadow of deleted blown lights. br
There are examples of each of these methods sprinkled the entire book. ‘Hence my comment is actually advertising on many pounds you into a self-photo gallery of the authors works best, we are not interested in the process too much and I told simply to admire.

This is not the case with this book. Succeeds very well in the inner exploration of the artist who can not in those of us with a brush in hand, but can with a camera. The explanation of the thought process behind some of the excellent teacher works here (ie Clearing Winter Storm by Adams) in combination with hardware and software techniques makes this an excellent source of reference material.

For starters, you’re showing some of the possibilities for the advanced amateur, yet offers a view of a master.

technique Please note that the book is a softcover, but the top and sides are covered with heavy plastic stock and a sense that high quality. Unfortunately, the dark side of Fingerprints show very clearly.

Finally, the quality of the pictures in this book would feel like home to graze on a table for this and.

  4. I spent much of my adolescence doing photography darkroom. I still have some of my photos in black and white and there is still a passion for me, but there’s no way I have time to spend hours at a pressure in the darkroom. Digital photography is more resolutions, which rivals the best film, and new software such as Nik Software’s Complete Collection – tools for professional photography and Photoshop, Lightroom and Aperture to convert images to black and white and also choose to grain film and a grayscale allows altered by the Zone System. />
Armed with that software and this book, you can groped digital photography with scoping issues concerning the nature of the works of Ansel Adams, adequate.

The zone system was exposed to an opportunity, then develop the film print, the range of gray tones to enhance or change the contrast in a photo. Since digital photography is not compatible with the development, but relies on software to process “your RAW image, what this book histograms, changes in exposure bracketing shots, lights and shadows against the filter. (Filters were used to modify the incident light film and taking advantage of the differential sensitivity to the colors of light in black and white film or improvement of the polarization of light. Only a polarizing filter works great with digital cameras. Then use “filters” have a digital algorithm is used to replicate the effect, for example, on a blue sky with a yellow filter.) />
It also provides information on issues of choice, composition and growth and ‘ Optimization of color. The book is full of excellent photos, which are well printed, illustrated in order to appreciate the details.

For me they are probably the three most important chapter order processing data (how to use Photo fix software), widening the range of contrast (provided that “effect” zone) and, finally, the pressure, always the hardest part, because what you see on screen is not that comes out of them. < , br />
If you want classic photography and admire their beauty to replicate with digital tools, this book is indispensable. Big thumbs up.

  5. Humiliating. The book is booked, and the contributions so far. This book shows how the master landscape photographers like Ansel Adams, he could be photographed if they had a digital camera. Frye has included everything you would expect from a quality “as” book. He has mastered the material, speaks to the reader and makes his points. He knows more than me, and that is why you pay the money for its expertise. It has many high quality images which are often recorded in contexts similar to “masters.” For me, the real strength has been looking at some pictures of the same scene, different parameters in the second.

And then there are the other reviews. Created by those who probably will understand always, the zone system, sound, composition and digital manipulation even better than me, there is much to aspire to, and as one critic said: “… For the advanced amateur , offers a view of a master. “/>
I struggled to find something original to say, to” thank “Program screws for his book. And there on page 6: “Moon, Hernandez, New Mexico, a copy of the photograph by Ansel Adams in 1941 took place. Many photographers have been moved by this picture, so why not groped, as a first approximation, the rights of what Adams was “a lucky shot is allowed,” in digital? This is a book called “New Mexico, then and now” Gone, the author of the entire country, shooting in the same place was like 5-10 years, to illustrate the development and changes. He also did not try! The problem is that Google could easily be found Hernandez, but you are much more difficult time sorting which is in a doublewide that sprawl along U.S. 84, north of Espanola. I insisted, though, and suddenly I realized that I was in the exact spot that Adam had. It ‘was the church, was a splinter of the cemetery. But the austerity was long gone, replaced by congestion, including truck doublewide and bright red. One image is of course possible, if your inclination to run by Diane Arbus. True to bear landscape photographer crying towel in hand. />
Now, if you have limited resources, and range for any additional expense, because the former Vermont Senator George Aiken once said about Vietnam, “It ’s time to declare victory and leave. ” And I, but not before Michael Frye thanked for a good book, a work of reference for many years to come. Highly recommended.
