introduced in 1967, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York City, New Documents – a major exhibition of personal visions of several photographers – the surprise of the exhibition is the work of Diane Arbus. Alone, against the advice of many friends, had pursued her documentation of people on the margins of society, and the amazing place in town. Suddenly he was famous, with students and imitators. In 1972 his work was everywhere, and was at the Venice Biennale, where he told the New York Times critic, Hilton Kramer, featured the overwhelming sentiment of the American Pavilion. But then Diane Arbus was dead, by his own hand. was “Nothing about her life, her photographs or her death an accident or ordinary,” wrote Richard Avedon. “They were mysterious and decisive and unimaginable if not for her. What is the way it is genius.” This half-hour documentary was the same year. He studied their work and ideas, often spoke in their own words, as a dear friend. It contains reflections of some who do their best, daughter Doon, teacher knew Lisette Model, colleague Marvin Israel, and John Szarkowski, then director of the photography department of the Museum of Modern Art
